Research - Magazine Cover

It was essential for me to carry out research on other magazines before beginning my project. I researched the magazine "vibe" as this is previously a magazine that i have read and i am interested in this. I am hoping to produce a magazine which is similar this to this as they are of the same genre i am using. Hopefully my magazine will have a large title at the top of the magazine name in a smart font. I would then like to have the main interesting image taking over most of the magazine like the pictures of the magazine above.

My Brief

My name is Nikki Maddrell and for my main task will create a music magazine based on my favourite music genre. The music genre i have chose to use is focused on R'n'B. The sub genre i am going to use to go alongside this is celebrity gossip. The magazine i'm going to use will relate to people the age of 15 - 25. The magazine i will create is going to consist of: title page, contents page and a two-page spread article on a new artist. I will be creating this by using PhotoShop and InDesign.

Preliminary Task - Contents Page

For the second part to my preliminary task i had to create a hand-drawn design to the college magazine contents page. The contents page consisted of a large title at the top saying "SMS This Week" and with the date underneath. This time i had managed to draw a college logo badge. I drew a big picture as the main feature for it. I offered a subscription process for people who would like to sign up to the college magazines and receive them for a cheaper price. Underneath all of this i created the heading "news" and underneath that i created a list of what information 6 pages would contain. I then drew a little competition for students to enter.

The colour scheme i would of chose to use would be red and white along with the front cover so it would again remain consistent. If i was to re-create this i would of made it a bit busier as it is a bit plain i would of also added a few more pages and drawn it out more interestingly.

NIkki - there is nothing on this blog! You need alot more on here to get a decent coursework grade Nikki. You will automatically lose 15 marks for having no prelin task on here!

It is pretty poor when the only post on your blog is mine- you should now be working on this (research) as homework and all the planning you are doing in class should be put on here also.

Research : Essential - research your target audience - use your demographic and psychographic profiling - do some questionannires and put yourresults on your blog

- institution - Which publisher will publish your magazine? Look at ones with similar magazines.

Also look at some audience/circulation figures for music magazines.

-props/costume list

- rough draft of feature article

- It might be nice to outline your artist and their image - and why they are good to be the featured artists in your magazine

- photographs taken and final chosen ones and why etc...

Preliminary Task - Analysis




For my preliminary task i had to create the front cover for a new college magazine by using Adobe InDesign. The main feature had to be a college student in a medium-close up angle with the title SMC above this and a few text-box's containing information on what will be included in the magazine.

In my opinion i think that my magazine cover worked fairly well as i spaced it out so that the picture had decent space around it for titles and text boxes. The bright colours i used stood out against the clear main image which contained college props which worked well with the college magazine theme. I used the same colours scheme throughout so that it looked important and consistent. I abbreviated the main title to "SMC" from "St Marys College" and made it very big and bold so it was memorable and clear. By using direct address, it makes my cover clear and brings out my masthead.

However, on the down side, i was not able to access the internet on the laptop i designed my cover on so therefore i was not able to use "DaFont" to use interesting fonts. I was also not able to add a barcode to make it look more realistic. I would of also of liked to add a St Marys logo onto the magazine.
